Banner quoting 'Prepare to meet thy God'

Last Saturday’s Pride march in Liverpool was a great occasion, according to the reports I’ve received.

I’ve been sent some photos depicting protestors with banners displaying biblical texts. They give the impression that the Bible disapproves of what Pride stands for.

Of course, they can take for granted that nobody in the march is going to get a bible out and check the references.

Except that I did.

The Amos 4:12 quote:

Prepare to meet your God

Actually, it reads

Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!

Liverpool isn’t Israel. More to the point, what has Israel done wrong? The answer comes a little earlier, in Amos 2:6-8:

because they sell the righteous for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals—
they who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth,
and push the afflicted out of the way;
father and son go in to the same girl,
so that my holy name is profaned;
they lay themselves down beside every altar
on garments taken in pledge;
and in the house of their God they drink
wine bought with fines they imposed.

So apart from the father and son bit it’s all about the rich exploiting the poor.

The other quote is from Hebrews 13:4.

Marriage is honourable and the bed undefiled but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

PrideHebrews
I don’t know which translation this comes from but this is the NRSV translation of Hebrews 13:1-5:

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have.

Either those protestors were at the wrong march or they are very good at not reading the Bible.
