SUMMARY:Reimagining the Prophetic – Modern Church Conference
DESCRIPTION:November 4th 10am – 4pm\nSarum College, Salisbury\n“Prophecy is the voice that God has lent to the silent agony, a voice to the plundered poor, to the profaned riches of this world. It is a form of living, a crossing point of God and (hu)man. God is raging in the prophets’ words.” (Rabbi Joshuah Heschel, ‘Thunder in the Soul’)\n \nJoin us for a day of worship and theological reflection on how the prophetic tradition can resource us in an age of ‘polycrisis’, led by a range of thinkers including Ruth Harley, Jayme Reaves and Anthony Reddie.\nCome and explore the meanings and textures of prophecy in the Hebrew scriptures, including through the legacy of Walter Brueggeman. Share stories of inspiring people and activities where you have seen the prophetic in action. Bring critical analysis to the notion of ‘speaking truth to power’. Explore diverse issues demanding our attention, and a panoply of forms of action – speaking, writing, creativity, protest, organising, politics. Be inspired to reflect anew on your own prophetic vocation, whatever that might look like. She is a feminist practical theologian, currently working on a PhD in which she is looking at the vocational narratives of older feminist women in the Church of England and how those narratives can challenge and expand our understanding of the vocation of the church as the body of Christ. Ruth is the co-author with Al Barrett of Being Interrupted: reimagining the church’s mission from the outside in (SCM Press, 2020). In both her theological and pastoral work, she is interested in ecclesiologies which centre the wisdom and experience of those most often ignored and overlooked in the life of the church.\n \nJayme R. Reaves\n\nJayme R. Reaves is a public theologian based in Dorset, United Kingdom. Originally from the American Deep South, she has worked in post-conflict Former Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland and focuses on bridging the gap between theology, peacemaking, and reconciliation. Jayme is lecturer in Biblical Studies and Theology at Sarum College. Jayme has published work on an Abrahamic theology of hospitality. Alongside her role at Sarum College, she serves as an Honorary Research Fellow at The Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham.\n \nAnthony G. Reddie\n\nAnthony G. Reddie is Professor of Black Theology at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Culture in Regent’s Park College. He is also an Extraordinary Professor of Theological Ethics and a Research Fellow with the University of South Africa. He is a prolific author of books, articles and chapters in edited books. He is the author of Theologizing Brexit: A Liberationist and Postcolonial Critique (Routledge, 2019). This book is the first intercultural and postcolonial theological exploration of the Brexit phenomenon. He is also the author of Living Black Theology: Decolonising Knowledge, the first Black postcolonial text for Oxford University Press. Anthony is the Editor of Black Theology: An International Journal. He is a recipient of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s 2020 Lambeth, Lanfranc Award for Education and Scholarship, given for ‘exceptional and sustained contribution to Black Theology in Britain and Beyond’\n
