Modern Church Forum: Dec 2026

Monday 7th Dec, 7 – 8pm
(zoom room will stay open til 8.30 for informal chat)

Contemplative Living

We shall be joined by Modern Church Council member Lorraine Cavanagh who will introduce her book, Silence in Ordinary: Contemplative Living for Busy People (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silence-Ordinary-Contemplative-Living-People/dp/1739156730) , and lead us in a discussion.

Lorraine explains, ‘I believe we are invited to choose a way of life that is often described as contemplative, and is often assumed to be embraced only by nuns or monks. This, in my experience, could not be further from the truth. Silence in Ordinary is quite simply a walk with God through the various sections of what might pass for an ordinary day. It is for those who lead busy working lives, as well as those who may no longer be working or who lead lives of enforced stillness. We carry silence within us and it is our most important source of rest and refreshment in any and all situations. It is also a place where God waits for us, eagerly looking forward to our company.’

Zoom link will be emailed to members – if you do not receive it by the event date, please contact office@modernchurch.org.uk

This event is members-only. Find out about becoming a Modern Church member here.

Forum is Modern Church’s members-only, facilitated online discussion space. It provides the opportunity for open theological exploration: a place to tell stories, share ideas, doubts and questions.

Forum is responsive to the desires of its members, so the programme is flexible. It works alongside Modern Church’s other activities, offering members the chance to ‘go deeper’, providing a platform to discuss our blogs, Modern Believing articles, conferences and panels and anything else that’s on members’ minds

Forum will meet every other month on a Monday evening from 7 – 8pm, with the Zoom room remaining open until 8.30pm for those who would like to linger longer for informal conversation.

The facilitators are:
Alison Webster (General Secretary)
Elaine Graham (Chair of Trustees)
Lorraine Cavanagh (Trustee)
